Never Give Out Your Steam Account Details

Sounds obvious I know, but there are people out there who will try to steal your account.

These phishers are more sophisticated than just asking for your user name and password. The main ways they try to get your account details are usually:

- Pretending to be from Steam or Valve. They will usually have an official sounding name like Account Verification and will tell you something like they need to check your account as it's been used for hacking or logged from multiple IPs. They will then say they need your account details to check or your account will be banned.

- Keyloggers - These are programs that log what you type on your computer. Make sure you have anti-virus software and check for viruses and spyware regularly. You can get good anti-virus software free like AVG.

- Fake Steam sites. These will look just like a regular Steam website. What usually happens is you will get a friends message from someone on your list saying there are free games if you go to this website. They can look very convincing but you can spot them because their website address is not a proper Steam one. The people sending you the message have most likely fallen for the same trick and have had their accounts stolen. Here is an example:

It's very easy to fall for these so be very careful.

If you do get your account stolen you can get it back, this is a link explaining how:

It looks like some people have had their steam accounts stolen by people using a very similar scam. This one promises free steam games if you enter your account name and password, do not enter them.

Update.

You can also lose your Steam account by sending people certain files from your Steam directory. If anyone asks you to send them any files from your Steam directory, say no or they could steal your account.

We will ban anyone we find trying to steal other users accounts. This is from our Terms of Service:

Quote:
18. Solicit passwords or personal identifying information for unintended, commercial or unlawful purposes from other users.
